Yunjishan is a provincial-level nature reserve in Guangdong Province, located 8 kilometers northwest of Xinfeng County, accessible from National Highway 105. It is 150 kilometers from Guangzhou city center, 198 kilometers from Shenzhen city center, and 165 kilometers from Shaoguan city center. Yunjishan is a mountainous scenic and tourist area that combines nature reserves with natural landscapes. The total area of the Yunjishan Nature Reserve is 87 square kilometers. There are more than ten peaks over a thousand meters within the reserve, with the main peak reaching an altitude of 1438 meters, making it the highest peak in the Pearl River Delta and the source of the Xinfeng River. The mountain is named for its resemblance to the traditional coiled hair buns worn by ancient elders and its frequent shrouding in clouds. Yunjishan boasts a rich biodiversity and diverse plant communities, including evergreen broadleaf forests, mixed coniferous and broadleaf forests, Masson pine, fir needle-leaf forests, bamboo forests, alpine shrub forests, sparse tree shrubs, and shrub grass slopes. It is home to nationally protected rare tree species such as Taxus wallichiana, Alsophila spinulosa, Pterocarya stenoptera, and Lithocarpus dealbatus, as well as second-tier protected tree species like Syzygium osmanthaefolium, Glyptostrobus pensilis, Eucommia ulmoides, Coptis chinensis, Cinnamomum septentrionale, Actinidia chinensis, and Fagus longipetiolata communities, among others. The wildlife includes national first-class protected animals such as clouded leopards, golden cats, pythons, small-clawed otters, and horned pheasants, as well as second-class protected animals like Sumatran rhinoceros, sambar deer, tufted deer, large and small civets, and pangolins, along with wild boars, Reeves’s muntjac, fruit civets, bamboo partridges, and Chinese hawfinches. The Yunjishan tourist area covers 9 square kilometers and is divided into five functional zones: the foothills resort area, the mountain sightseeing area, the hot spring recuperation area, the Xianhu tourist area, and the Yuanyang Lake leisure area. The area is rich in tourism resources, with a clever combination of mountains, rocks, water, forests, cliffs, and springs, offering numerous scenic spots. The water features include Banana Storm Charm, Bamboo Shadow Ripples, Source of Xinfeng River, Flowing Cloud Waterfall, Stegosaurus Waterfall, Qinglong Waterfall, Xianhu, Yuanyang Lake, and hot springs; the caves include Longyan, Yangzhou Alley, and Xiangong Rock. Moreover, the scenery here is distinctive in each season: enjoying mountain flowers in spring, playing with the breeze in summer, viewing maple leaves in autumn, and treading on snow in winter. The source waterfall of Xinfeng River, with a drop of 128 meters, complements the five large characters ‘Source of Xinfeng River’ inscribed on the rock beside the waterfall by Mr. Shen Peng, a member of the Chinese Calligraphers Association, making it a spectacular sight. The scenic area is open year-round from 08:00 to 17:30. Due to severe weather conditions, the scenic area may close at any time.
