Yunmen Mountain is located in the southern suburbs of Qingzhou City, an ancient famous mountain in central Shandong, and one of the iconic attractions of Qingzhou. The main peak of Yunmen Mountain, Dayunding, stands at an elevation of 421 meters, with its towering and steep terrain, and the lush pine and cypress forests. Climbing to the top allows for a panoramic view of Qingzhou City, making it an excellent spot for sunrise viewing. However, Yunmen Mountain is famous for its stone niche Buddha statues and cliff inscriptions, particularly the large cliff carving of the character ‘Shou’ (longevity), which is a landmark of the area.
Travel Tips: Yunmen Mountain is conveniently close to the city center, attracting many locals for hiking and fitness. If you stay near the mountain’s base, you can wake up early to climb and watch the sunrise. After purchasing tickets at the Yunmen Mountain Square, you can take a sightseeing train into the mountain (15 yuan including round trip) to the ticket check point. Self-driving tourists can also drive directly to the parking lot next to the ticket check point. However, during the peak tourist season, private vehicles are generally not allowed into the mountain and must be parked at the base and switch to the sightseeing train.

Tour Guide: Yunmen Mountain is not very high, and the stone steps leading up are not steep. Along the way up, you can successively visit Guanshou Pavilion, Wangshou Pavilion Taoist Temple, Yunmen Cave, the ‘Shou’ character carving, and Yun Kong statues. Most of the main attractions are concentrated at the top, where there is a viewing pavilion that offers a panoramic view of the city on clear days.

There is also a natural cave, Yunmen Cave, that runs through the mountain from north to south, often releasing clouds and mist during the transition from summer to autumn, resembling a fairyland. Passing through Yunmen Cave to the north side, you can get close to the famous giant ‘Shou’ character on the cliff, which stands 7.5 meters tall, with just the ‘cun’ (inch) part being over two meters high.

Standing beneath it makes you feel very small, as it embodies the saying ‘a person is not an inch tall’. This character was written by Zhou Quan, the head of the Hengwang Mansion during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, and has been a pilgrimage site for many visitors seeking blessings.

The stone niche statues on Yunmen Mountain are also very classic, mostly consisting of Buddhist statues such as Bodhisattvas and warriors, with exquisite carving skills. There are a total of five stone niches on the sunny side of Yunmen Mountain, with 272 stone carvings, some of which can be traced back to the Kaihuang period of the Sui Dynasty. Despite over 1400 years of erosion and war, many are still well-preserved. Yunmen Mountain also has many temples and Taoist monasteries, including Wangshou Pavilion Taoist Temple, where the west wing is a place to worship the God of Wealth, with thriving incense. The Ming Dynasty’s all-stone five-beam structure ‘Tianxian Yu Nu Ci’ at the top of the mountain is still well-preserved and worth visiting.
