The Yuquyuan Memorial Hall is located at the southern foot of Gushan Mountain. It is rebuilt from the former residence of Yu Yue, a scholar in the late Qing Dynasty, known as Yu Lou. Yu Yue is a prominent scholar of Sinology in the late Qing Dynasty. During the Tongzhi and Guangxu periods of the Qing Dynasty, Yu Yue was employed as a professor at the Gujing Jingshe on Gushan Mountain in Hangzhou for more than thirty years. The disciples named the Gujing Jingshe where he lectured as Yu Lou. In 1878 (the fourth year of Guangxu), the disciples initiated the construction of Yu Lou. It was initially built with two floors and surrounded by a wall. Inside the courtyard, there are rockeries, pavilions and towers, and everything is available. The newly-built Yuquyuan Memorial Hall adopts the imitation Jiangnan architecture with black brick walls, black tiles and brown pillars, and upturned eaves. On the ground floor, abundant cultural relics, pictures and materials comprehensively display Yu Yue’s life, academic achievements and his contribution to the landscape culture of the West Lake. In particular, a number of Yuquyuan’s manuscripts and calligraphy works are really rare treasures. Opening hours: 08:00 – 17:00 from January 1st to December 31st.
