Yuyuan Dian Chun Tang is a revolutionary site associated with the Shanghai Small Sword Society Uprising, located in the northeast part of the classical Jiangnan garden, Yuyuan Garden. The Shanghai Small Sword Society was a popular revolutionary organization active in Shanghai, Qingpu, Jiading, and other regions during the mid-19th century. In anticipation of the arrival of the Taiping Army, the Shanghai Small Sword Society initiated an uprising on September 7, 1853, establishing a revolutionary regime known as the ‘Great Ming State’. Liu Liquan was appointed as the leader, titled ‘Grand Commander of the Great Ming State in charge of politics and religion’. The former Xuegong was set up as the command post, with Chen A Lin as the ‘Deputy Commander’, and Dian Chun Tang was established as the ‘public office’, also known as the ‘residence’. Dian Chun Tang was an important location for the Shanghai Small Sword Society’s uprising forces to discuss military and political affairs, command battles, and issue decrees. The Shanghai Small Sword Society persisted in their struggle for 18 months. After the failure of the uprising, the former Xuegong was burned down by the Qing army, and Dian Chun Tang suffered severe damage. After liberation, the party and government renovated Dian Chun Tang. Currently, Dian Chun Tang serves as the Shanghai Small Sword Society Uprising Memorial Hall, displaying weapons used by the uprising forces, the minted currency ‘Sun and Moon Money’, and issued proclamations. The opening hours are Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00-16:30; closed on Mondays. The specific business status is subject to the daily opening conditions.
