The Zhan’ao Pagoda, located in the Guanchao Resort Park, is also known as the Zhenhai Pagoda. It is a pavilion-style Buddhist pagoda built for the tide god. It was first built in the Song Dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming Dynasty. It has a history of more than 380 years. It is a typical Chinese pagoda and is relatively exquisite among the ancient pagodas along the coast of Zhejiang, China. The Zhan’ao Pagoda is 40 meters high and 25 meters around. It has a hexagonal plane, seven floors on the outside and eight floors inside. It is made of bricks and has a wooden structure. The shape is very magnificent. Climbing the Zhan’ao Pagoda to watch the first-line tide is a major feature of watching the Haining tide. Looking down from the tower, the style and features of the ancient city of Yanguan can be seen at a glance. The Yuhuang Mountain in Hangzhou and the Dongshan Mountain in Xiashi can also be faintly seen. Relevant legend: In ancient Chinese mythology, ‘Ao’ is a huge fish. It has human-like emotions, but its anger and joy can trigger disasters such as tsunamis. And ‘tower’ is a sacred object in Buddhism. Legend has it that it can subdue demons and monsters. So people built the ‘Zhan’ao Pagoda’ to pray that it can suppress the Ao fish and prevent it from making waves and endangering humans. When the Ao fish stops moving, the sea is peaceful. So the ‘Zhan’ao Pagoda’ is also called the ‘Zhenhai Pagoda’. Like another landscape on the seawall – the Zhenhai Iron Ox, it is something created by ancient Chinese people in pursuit of a better life. Opening hours: Open all year round from 8:00 to 16:30.
