Also known as the palace city of Zhao capital, Zhao Wangcheng is located about 4 kilometers southwest of Handan City. It is a relatively well-preserved ancient city site from the Warring States Period in China and is an important national cultural relic protection unit. Zhao Wangcheng is composed of three small cities: the east city, the west city, and the north city. The plane is in the shape of a Chinese character ‘pin’. The total area is about 5.05 million square meters. Around the ruins, there are rammed earth city walls with a residual height of about 3 to 8 meters that wind and undulate. Inside, there are neatly arranged and densely distributed building foundations. Underneath, there are more than a dozen large rammed earth foundation sites with a large area. There are many remains of city gate towers around. The west city is relatively complete and nearly square. There are currently five large earth platforms on the ruins. In the middle and slightly south, there is a relatively high ‘Dragon Platform’, which is the foundation site of the main building of the palace at that time. From the ‘Dragon Platform’ to the north, there are still two large rammed earth platforms, forming a north-south central axis. On both sides of the central axis, there are still six remaining ground rammed earth platforms and underground rammed earth building foundation sites. This is a magnificent group of palace buildings centered around the ‘Dragon Platform’. The east city and the west city are separated by only one city wall. There are two large earth platforms in the city. According to legend, they are the ‘South General Platform’ and the ‘North General Platform’ where the King of Zhao inspected his troops. Between the two platforms and in the north and south, there are underground rammed earth foundation sites. This is the north-south central axis building group with the general platforms as the main body in the east city. The north city is an irregular square. Except for some remaining sections of the ground wall in the southern section of the west wall, there are only underground wall sites left. The earth platform in the western part of the ruins is second only in area to the ‘Dragon Platform’ and is also the foundation site of a group of palace building complexes.
