Zhaojialou Ancient Town in Pujiang Town, Shanghai originated in the early years of the Yuan Dynasty. It was once the reclamation center of Pudong in ancient times. Today, a large number of buildings in Ming and Qing styles are still preserved here. There are also old streets, water alleys, and stone bridges, presenting a typical style of Jiangnan water towns. Come here for a stroll on weekends. You can taste various snacks and delicacies, take a break by the river, or take a rowing boat to漫游 water alleys (10 yuan per person, about 17 minutes) and enjoy all kinds of comforts.


Zhaojialou Ancient Town is mainly composed of three old streets: Snack Street, Culture Street, and Commodity Street. Entering the ancient town from the main archway on Shendu Road, you will arrive at Snack Street (Jixing East Street and Pingxi West Street). Here gathers various Jiangnan delicacies and snacks. Foodies must not miss it. Crossing the river over the stone bridge is Culture Street (Chunyou Street).


Here you can see the cotton painting artworks of Mr. Yuan Hongbin, a master of arts and crafts. The craftsmanship is extremely exquisite. Walking further, you will come to Commodity Street (Baonan Street). On this long and narrow old street, there are many small commodity stores and it is very lively. Speaking of delicacies, what you see more in Zhaojialou are pork skins, pickles, pastries that are abundant in the Pudong area, as well as cured products such as salted ducks and salted chickens.


The local specialty of Zhaojialou, ‘Three Treasures of Zhaojialou’, is even more popular. They are Zhaojialou mutton, Zhaojialou braised pork trotter (hand-torn oil-drained braised pork trotter), and Zhaojialou Daqu (a famous liquor in Shanghai). Especially the first two are worth a taste. In addition, various snacks can be seen everywhere on the old street. When you are tired from walking, have a bowl of local small wontons, have two fried dough fritters, or taste Xiasha steamed dumplings to satisfy your taste buds.


Moreover, the consumption here is also relatively affordable. There is also a garden scenic spot in the ancient town – Liyuan. Inside, there are exhibition halls such as the Memorial Hall of Qin Yubo, the City God of Shanghai, the City God Culture Exhibition Hall, the Memorial Hall of Ye Zongxing, Dayu of Huangpu River, the exhibition room of the overall planning model of Zhaojialou, and the Art Museum of Qin Yi.
