To reach Zhaoming Grand Meditation Temple, one must first pass through a steep ancient Zen forest path. On both sides of the path are dense bamboo forests. Inside Zhaoming Grand Meditation Temple, there are buildings such as the Skanda Hall, Mahavira Hall, Avalokitesvara Hall, and Sutra Depository. However, they were all rebuilt one after another in recent years. Continuing up from Zhaoming Temple is Baiyunwo. Here, there are many practicing masters and lay Buddhists. If you come here, be sure to keep quiet. Further ahead, you can see mountain springs and the translation platform of Prince Zhaoming. On the site of the old translation platform, a translation pavilion and a stone tablet of the translation platform have been built, telling of its glorious achievements and the allusions of the Buddhist righteousness of the Sutra Distribution Platform. Zhaoming Grand Meditation Temple is the place for the rejuvenation of the Linji Sect and is now of the Pure Land Sect. The temple buildings are magnificent and the bells and chimes are melodious. It is an important chanting Buddhist道场 in China strongly recommended by the famous contemporary monk Master Jingkong. The current Zhaoming Meditation Temple is composed of Zhaoming Lower Courtyard, Upper Courtyard, Zhigong Meditation Temple, Baiyunwo Lecture Hall, and Sutra Distribution Platform. The ancient temple was built more than 1700 years ago during the Datong period of the Liang Dynasty. At that time, it was not called Zhaoming Temple. Later, Prince Zhaoming Xiao Tong compiled ‘Selections of Refined Literature’ and annotated the ‘Diamond Sutra’ in Mount Tianmu. He made great contributions to preserving ancient Chinese literary materials and promoting Buddhism. The common people missed him. After his death, they renovated a dilapidated temple and added his name – Zhaoming to this temple. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:00 to 16:00. Tips: Please do not wear shorts or skirts shorter than knee-length when entering the temple.
