The Zhejiang University Museum of Art and Archaeology, situated at the southwest end of the Zijingang Campus, is a significant cultural landmark. It stands as the first art history museum in China to be designed and constructed according to the conservation standards of the American Association of Museums.
The museum is divided into two main areas: the museum and the academic sections. These areas encompass exhibition halls, collection storage rooms, restoration demonstration rooms, academic report halls, and educational activity areas, totaling an exhibition space of 3500 square meters. Its primary mission is to support and enhance the teaching and research activities of Zhejiang University. The museum achieves this by collecting, teaching, researching, and displaying original artworks, and by fostering collaboration with teachers and students from various disciplines across the university. This commitment is aimed at improving the visual abilities, aesthetic literacy, and critical thinking skills of the university’s faculty and students.
Beyond its role within the university, the museum is a treasured cultural resource for Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China, and the world at large. It extends its reach to the public by sharing its collections, exhibitions, and educational projects. This is achieved through lending exhibits, hosting seminars, and engaging in academic publishing, thereby sharing its resources with local, national, and international audiences. The museum plays a vital role in fulfilling the university’s mission of promoting and disseminating knowledge.
The museum is open to visitors all year round, operating from Tuesday to Sunday between 09:00 and 17:00. It remains closed on all Mondays.
