In the seventh year of the Yongzheng reign of the Qing Dynasty (1729), four Zhengyin Academies were established within Quanzhou Ancient City. These were schools for scholars to learn the official language. They were separately located in Baiyuan Nunnery, Chengtian Temple, Tielupu, and Fengshengpu, all rebuilt from free schools. These academies were established according to the imperial court’s decree. Their purpose was to learn the official language and promote the official language required by the court, which was taken as the main educational content of the academies, showing great differences from other academies.
To inherit the cultural functions of the Zhengyin Academy, Quanzhou Ancient City Administration and Quanzhou Culture and Tourism Group selected Fuweng Confucian Temple as the site to reconstruct the Zhengyin Academy. It aims to rely on the millennium-old cultural context of the ancient city represented by Fuweng Confucian Temple, extend the scholarly atmosphere, and combine with the promotion plan of the public welfare activity “Silent Nourishment · Enjoyable Reading in the Ancient City” to create an all-round reading atmosphere for the millennium-old city with thousands of people enjoying reading. The Zhengyin Academy integrates the profound cultural heritage of Quanzhou and incorporates the cultural context of Quanzhou into daily life.
