Luting Zhongcun is a millennia-old village nestled in Ningbo, likened to a hidden paradise. Located at the northern foot of the Siming Mountain Range, the terrain slopes from south to north with the Xiaolu Creek flowing through the village. This place boasts a long-standing history, featuring green mountains, beautiful waters, ancient temples, old bridges, and traditional dwellings, showcasing the unique characteristics of the ancient village landscape in Eastern Zhejiang. Approaching Zhongcun, one is greeted by layers of lush green mountains, with a clear and transparent Xiaolu Creek meandering through the center of the village, dividing it into two parts, creating a view of facing each other across the water.
Most of the existing residential buildings within the village are made of blocks of stone, built in the traditional rural architectural style with simple decoration. The internal layout of the village retains the texture of traditional streets and alleys, maintaining the overall pattern intact. The Baiyun Bridge within the village was originally built during the Tang Dynasty’s Zhen Guan era, and after several destructions and reconstructions, the existing bridge was built in the 16th year of the Guangxu Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, which has a history of over a hundred years. From a distance, this towering single-arch stone bridge with a steep arch spans across the Xiaolu Creek like a rainbow. The bridge is tall and narrow, with mountains on both sides standing tall. Complementing the Baiyun Bridge, to the south, are 20 stepping stones connected to the arch bridge. These stepping stones, unique to mountain streams, do not have bridge planks, allowing floods to flow through the gaps between the stones, and pedestrians can cross the water by stepping on the stones. The principle is similar to the overflow channels of modern reservoir dams, serving to overflow floods and protect the bridge. Today, villagers have also opened farmhouse leisure activities, producing dishes such as grey juice dumplings, roasted bamboo shoots, stream fish, and dried bamboo shoots, all of which have a strong rural flavor.
