Zhonglou Ancient Village in Conghua is one of the ancient villages that has been well-preserved and is part of a batch of historical and cultural protection areas in Guangzhou City. It has a history of over a hundred years and was built by the Ouyang clan during the Qing Xianfeng period. The area of the complex is nearly 15,000 square meters.
The village is centered around the Ouyang Renshan Ancestral Hall, with seven alleys on either side of the central axis. Each alley has houses on both sides, with seven households per alley, totaling 49 households. The two corridors of each household face each other, a building form known as ‘mutual watch and assistance,’ which allows for easy mutual support. In times of trouble, everyone helps.
The layout of the residential area is three rooms with two corridors, with walls in three layers. The irregular waste bricks are sandwiched between the inner and outer layers, making it impossible for thieves to pry open the walls. There are no windows in the houses, only doors and walls. The roof has a piece of transparent tile about 20 centimeters wide, through which sunlight filters down, creating a charming atmosphere. This design serves two purposes: one is for theft prevention, and the other is to keep the rooms cool.
Opening hours: The village is open all year round, from Monday to Sunday, all day long.
