The Martyrs’ Shrine covers an area of about 766 square meters, and the building area is about 536 square meters. It is a mixed structure of shell lime, sand and Chinese fir. The architectural style combines the design of Chaoshan folk ancestral halls, with a ‘four-point gold’ plane layout. The veranda is connected to the worship pavilion, and is decorated with Western decorative styles. What is more eye-catching are the three characters ‘Martyrs’ Shrine’ on the door plaque and the couplet ‘Famous throughout the seas, Pillar of the country protecting the south of heaven’ on the pillars on both sides of the door. This was written by Wu Zhihui, who is known as one of the ‘four great calligraphers’.
