Zhongshan Zhanyuan Garden, also known as Zhongshan Grand Mansion Gate, is located in the southwestern suburbs of Zhongshan City. It is currently the largest classical private garden in Lingnan region. It is divided into three areas: Zhanyuan Birthday Celebration, Qijiang Corridor Bridge, and Zhanyuan Planting Blessings. The architecture of Zhanyuan Garden is based on Suzhou and Hangzhou gardens. Combined with the layout context of Lingnan water towns, the natural landscapes such as Huzhou Mountain and Beixi River form a whole with the buildings of Zhanyuan Garden, creating a harmonious architectural style between nature and humanity. The building structure of Zhanyuan Garden is simple and solemn, and the style is simple and unrestrained. Most of its materials are ancient folk materials. Every brick, every tile, every door and every window condenses traces of history. At the same time, it also absorbs the style of Western gardens. The water bodies and decorations are mostly in geometric forms. The garden is natural and unrestrained, with distinct levels. The building attaches importance to site selection, and the shape is concise and refined. Zhanyuan Garden was personally designed by the owner, Mr. Huang Yuanxin, to build an elegant and delicate, peaceful residence for his parents to enjoy their old age. To highlight strict love and always remember kindness and grace, the owner named the bridge after his father’s name, named Zhanyuan Garden after his mother’s surname, and specially set aside a place to establish the ‘Filial Piety Museum’, where painted pictures of ‘Twenty-four Filial Exemplars’ are hung. Today, Zhanyuan Garden has gradually formed a precious artistic landscape of ‘one mountain, one water, one garden; also poetry, also painting, also leisure’.
