Located on the west side of West Lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Zhong Tianzhu Temple is situated between Tianzhu Mountain and Lingyin Temple, and is the central one among the three Tianzhu temples. The temple primarily venerates the Bodhisattva Guanyin, making it a sacred site for the Bodhisattva, with a thriving incense culture, and is an excellent place for worship and blessings. Historically, Zhong Tianzhu Temple has always been favored by monarchs of various dynasties and holds a high status. The temple was first established during the Sui Dynasty, and during the Northern Song Dynasty, it was royally named ‘Tian Ning Wanshou Yongzuo Zen Temple’. Emperor Gaozong of the Southern Song Dynasty once bestowed a Buddha statue, which was placed in the Huayan Treasure Pavilion within the temple, and expanded the temple’s buildings. By the time of Emperor Ningzong of the Southern Song Dynasty, it was ranked as the first among the Five Mountains and Ten Monasteries of Zen Buddhism, and was highly revered. Today, visitors can also see many believers who come to the temple for its fame. In addition to worship, the scenery around the temple is also very pleasant, with attractions such as Qiansui Rock and Fengmu Valley, all of which can be visited one by one. The temple is open all year round from 05:30 to 16:00; on New Year’s Eve, it is open from 05:30 to 16:00 and again from 22:00 to 02:00.
