Zhuangshang Earth Building, also known as Zhuangshang Hakka Earth Building due to the residence of the Ye surname Hakka people, is recognized as one of the largest earth buildings in the world. Locally, it is referred to as Zhuangshang Building and was constructed during the Shunzhi to Kangxi reigns of the Qing Dynasty. This earth building is a combination of unit-style and corridor-style residential architecture, built with rammed earth.
The building’s plan is rectangular at the front and circular at the back, stretching approximately 220 meters from north to south, with a circumference of over 700 meters. It stands at a height of 9 meters, with a construction area of about 9000 square meters, covering an area of approximately 34650 square meters. Built following the natural slope of the mountain, the structure is well-arranged and tiered. The internal structure is divided into two rings, both featuring dougong-style wooden beam frames. The outer ring consists of three stories and 142 units. The earth building has four main gates facing east, west, south, and north, as well as a small eastern gate. Apart from residential spaces, the building houses a variety of public buildings and facilities necessary for social life, making it a microcosm of traditional rural Chinese society. It is open all year round and accessible 24 hours a day.Zhuangshang Earth Building
