Zhuanta Hutong, one of Beijing’s oldest hutongs, is situated in Xicheng District. It stretches from Taipingqiao Street in the west to Xisi South Street in the east. With a history dating back over 700 years, it is mentioned in dramas from the Yuan Dynasty and is referred to by locals as ‘the first hutong in Beijing’ and ‘the root of Beijing’s hutongs’.
The name Zhuanta Hutong is derived from a blue-brick ancient tower within the hutong, which is the tomb tower of the renowned monk Wan Song from the transitional period between the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. This historic site has been home to many well-known figures from modern times, including Lu Xun, Zhang Henshui, Shao Lizhi, and Qi Yanming. Numbers 42 and 44 of the hutong were the former residence of Mr. Feng Yuxiang.
Notably, courtyard number 84 at Mr. Lu Xun’s former residence is where the novella ‘The New Year’s Sacrifice’ was penned. However, the former residences of these celebrities have been demolished, and their original appearances no longer exist. The only remaining historical landmark is the Wan Song ancient tower, which stands at the entrance of the hutong.
