01 The legendary Yingge across time and space. Chaoshan culture is an important part of Lingnan culture and an important branch of Chinese culture. In recent years, more and more foreign audiences have developed a strong interest in traditional Chinese culture. Lingnan dance dramas have broad prospects and infinite possibilities on the international stage. The dance drama ‘Yingge’ takes the traditional dance form in Chaoshan area known as the ‘Chinese war dance’ – Yingge dance as the core and tells a legendary story spanning time and space.

Synopsis: In the early 1940s, the father went to Nanyang and there was no news. The mother raised her son with great hardships. By accident, when the son knocked on the Yingge mallet left by his father, he mistakenly entered an illusory time and space, understood his father’s patriotism and righteousness, untied his mother’s knot in her heart, and also realized and grew in the process. The three rivers flow into the sea, and a letter returns to Chaoshan. The inherited bloodline is unceasingly beaten by waves and not scattered by wind!

02 A visual feast of the blend of ancient and modern. The stage design of the dance drama ‘Yingge’ is superb. In the play, ‘traditional Chaoshan cultural elements’ are cleverly combined with ‘modern stage art techniques’, creating a visual effect that is both ancient and novel, traditional and modern. On the stage, cultural elements of Chaoshan area are cleverly integrated, complementing the heroic and valiant style of Yingge dance. Coming-of-age ceremonies for young men and women ‘Chu Huayuan’, the famous wood carving, iron rod puppets, Chao embroidery, beef balls, Chaozhou oiled paper lanterns, etc. are all organically integrated into the plot, showing the rich and multi-faceted Chaoshan culture. These cultural elements transcend regions and connect the common Chinese civilization. They not only show the richness and diversity of Chinese culture, but also make the audience seem to be in a world full of mystery and charm through the presentation of modern stage technology.

In addition, the costume design of the dance drama ‘Yingge’ is highly distinctive. The costume designer has integrated the clan sentiments of the Chaoshan region and various intangible cultural heritage elements such as embedded porcelain, Chaozhou opera, paper-cutting, and more, into the creation process. This makes the costumes of ‘Yingge’ not only rich in local characteristics but also in line with modern aesthetic demands.

When the dancers of ‘Yingge’ perform on stage in these gorgeous and dazzling costumes, they appear as if they are heroes and warriors emerging from history.

The ‘Yingge’ dance, known as the ‘Chinese War Dance’, runs through the entire drama ‘Yingge’, carrying the aspirations of countless Chinese people to go forward for their country, despite the odds, and embodying the unyielding national spirit that has been passed down for thousands of years. Dancers showcase the heroic and bold spirit of ‘Yingge’ with their exquisite dance skills and emotional performances.
