The hometown of Zhu Xi is in Fuqian Village, Wufu Town. It was built in the fourteenth year of the Southern Song Dynasty. It has been renovated many times in successive dynasties and was later destroyed in the late Republic of China. The existing Ziyang Tower was originally Zhu Xi’s former residence. Inside, there is the place where Zhu Xi studied when he was young – a half-mu square pond, an ancient spiritual spring well, and the Zhuzi camphor tree.

The Zhuzi camphor tree is said to have been planted by Zhu Xi himself. Later generations call it the ‘Shenlang camphor tree’, which requires twelve people to hug it. The allusion of the half-mu square pond comes from Zhu Xi’s ‘Thoughts on Reading’: ‘A half-mu square pond is like a mirror opened up. The sky’s light and cloud’s shadows are wandering together. Ask where does the water get so clear? For there is a source of living water coming in.

‘ Near Ziyang Tower, there are also historical sites such as Zhuzi Lane, Xingxian Academy, Xingxian Ancient Street, and Zhuzi Granary. Opening hours: Open all year round and all day.
