The Zilicun Diaolou Cluster is located in Tangkou Town, Kaiping City. It is one of the world cultural heritage sites. The natural environment of this village is beautiful. Ponds, lotus ponds, rice fields, and grasslands are scattered among them. They form an interesting contrast with numerous diaolous and residential buildings. It is extremely beautiful, forming a farming ink painting like a spring misty landscape and idyllic poetry.
It is a western-style castle village with unique Lingnan rural charm. There are 15 diaolous in Zilicun with different styles, exquisite shapes, and rich connotations. They are outstanding representatives of the prosperous period of Kaiping diaolous. Most of the diaolous in Zilicun were built in the 1920s and 1930s. They were built by local overseas Chinese to protect the lives and property safety of their relatives in their hometowns. The diaolous in Zilicun skillfully combine traditional Chinese rural architectural culture with western architectural culture. Rarely do they reflect the extensive exchanges of modern Chinese and Western cultures in Chinese villages. They have become a commemorative monument of Chinese overseas Chinese culture and a unique world architectural art landscape. The buildings preserve complete furniture, living facilities, production tools, and daily necessities. They are rich and interesting and are witnesses of overseas Chinese culture and life at that time. This village belongs to Qiangya Village Committee of Tangkou Town. There are 63 farmer households, 175 villagers, and 248 overseas Chinese. Overseas remittances are one of the sources of livelihood for villagers. After the Opium War, people’s lives were difficult. Coupled with the recruitment of laborers in China by Western countries, batches of villagers from Zilicun began to live overseas. Opening hours: Open all year round from 09:10 to 17:50.
