Zongtaishan Mountain, situated at the eastern end of the Chuanshan Peninsula, stands tall at an elevation of 309.2 meters. It faces the Zhujiajian of the Zhoushan Archipelago across the sea and has been one of the historically significant military strongholds in Eastern Zhejiang. From the summit, one can clearly overlook the waters of Meishan Port, Luotou Waterway, and Shitou Ocean.
At the peak, there are the remains of a beacon tower, originally constructed during the Ming Dynasty’s Hongwu period, in the 20th year (A.D. 1387), and was then known as Santa Mountain Tower. It was continued in use during the Qing Dynasty and was promoted to the General Tower, overseeing five beacon towers including Gaoshan, Tuze, Guanshan, Meishan, and Xiaguang Shu. The architectural structure of Zongtaishan Tower is unique. The base of the tower is trapezoidal, measuring 7 meters at the top, 8 meters at the bottom, and 3.7 meters in height; it was rammed with sand and soil, making it very solid. Above this, a stone house was built, standing at 1.8 meters high, with a width of 2.8 meters and a depth of 2.5 meters, featuring a hard mountain top, covered with slab stones, and stone columns and beams joined by mortise and tenon. The walls are built with random stones, and there is a southern door.
The opening times are from January 1st to December 31st, open all day long.
