Macau is a city where diverse cultures coexist harmoniously, featuring not only Southern European and Portuguese architecture and culture, but also a continuous lineage of Chinese historical architecture. The rich and long-standing Chinese culture is unbroken and endless. Besides their historical and cultural value, these structures also serve as venues for intangible cultural heritage, integrating into the daily lives of residents. Many of Macau’s historical buildings are closely connected to modern Chinese history and patriotic figures. For instance, Zheng Guanying completed his world-renowned work ‘Words of Warning to a Prosperous Age’ at the Zheng Family Mansion in Macau, influencing generations of great figures. The residence of the patriotic general Ye Ting in Macau is well-preserved to this day, and his heroic deeds are widely celebrated. Buildings such as the Mirror Lake Hospital, Tong Shantang, and Guanyin Hall bear witness to the unity and assistance provided by various sectors during the war, rushing to the front lines to defend the motherland, and composing stories of shared roots, unity, and kinship. In 2024, marking the 25th anniversary of the establishment of the Macau Special Administrative Region, the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government hosts the ‘Roots and Branches: The Patriotism in Macau’s Historical Architectures’ exhibition. Through a selection of over 100 pieces/sets of exhibits, it narrates the enduring and unwavering sentiment of patriotism to the public. Open from October 31st to January 1st, with specific business hours subject to the day’s opening status.
