I study nature. Many of its forms come from observing plants. I observe nature carefully and do things as I see them. I draw something on paper. Then I can enter the air with a single line and define the air without stealing it from anyone. —Ruth Asawa. David Zwirner is pleased to announce an exhibition of sculptures and works on paper by American artist Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) at the gallery’s Hong Kong branch. Asawa perseveres in experimenting with various media. Her works are known for being based on simple, repetitive gestures and accumulating into complex compositions. The artist moves easily between abstraction and figuration in two and three dimensions, creating a large and diverse body of work. Although their visual effects are different, most importantly, they reflect her belief in the complete integration of artistic practice and family life. This exhibition is Asawa’s first solo exhibition in Greater China and provides an overview of the artist’s extensive artistic practice, with particular attention to her love for the natural world, which in turn provides a continuous source of inspiration for her art.
