In the 1950s, Davis recorded many albums with his sextet, including ‘Porgy and Bess’ released in 1959. During this period, Davis began to experiment with modal playing. His improvisation is based on scales rather than chord changes. This prompted him to record the next band album ‘Kind of Blue’ in March and April 1959. This album became a milestone of modern jazz and is also the most popular record in Davis’ career. Eventually, it sold more than 2 million copies, which is a huge success for jazz records. Miles Davis and Blue Note. On May 9, 1952, Miles Davis recorded for Blue Note Records for the first time. He recorded six different songs in nine sessions at the WOR studio in New York City. Most of these materials were released in 10-inch albums shortly after recording. The tracks recorded in 1952 are called Miles Davis – Young Man With A Horn and also appear in Blue Note’s Modern Jazz series.
In 1952, the album was far from Miles’ best work. However, as the progress of three albums continues, the arc of the musical story also extends, showing how Davis goes beyond pure bebop music and creates his own unique musical vision and style.
‘This is why jazz is so exciting. It illuminates the character of the creator and creates an emotion and transmits ideological vibrations at the moment of creation. Miles is a master in this process.’ – Leonard Feather. The 1953 recording is indispensable and worthy of continuing the far-reaching ‘Birth Of The Cool’. The tracks recorded by Van Gelder feature Miles’ trumpet without saxophone and give him complete control. In ‘Take Off’ and ‘The Leap’, he shows how to construct a perfect trumpet solo. In 1958, Miles recorded for Blue Note again. As a member of Cannonball Adderley’s band, he participated in the recording of the wonderful album ‘Somethin’ Else’. ‘Miles Davis has an all-encompassing and never-stopping attitude towards jazz. In an era when jazz tends to be academic and reserved for repertoire orchestras rather than moving forward, he reminds people that the essence of music is infinite innovation and making use of all available means.’ – William Ruhlmann.
