On the final day of our journey, after a restful night, I woke up to pack my bags and prepare for the trip home. Reflecting on our 10-day adventure, here’s a brief summary of our experiences:
**Overall Satisfaction:**
1. The joy of traveling with my daughter was worth more than 90 points on its own. Our destination was secondary to the time we spent together.
2. We were fortunate to have my older brother join us on the third day. Despite having visited most of the attractions on our route and not being in the best of health, he flew over to accompany us.
3. There were minor itineraries we couldn’t fulfill, such as not visiting the Mogao Caves due to ticket availability, missing the Shandan Military Horse Farm, Wuwei, and a newly discovered looted cave my daughter was keen on seeing. However, these imperfections added an adventurous touch to our trip, like the unique experiences we had at the Great Buddha Temples.
4. Here are a few suggestions for future travelers:
A. While road conditions are generally good, for destinations like Xitai or the Mars Highway to Mangya, an off-road vehicle would provide peace of mind.
B. With significant distances between points, having two or more drivers is advisable due to heavy traffic and to avoid driving while fatigued.
C. It’s best to avoid travel after dark as road lighting is poor, even on highways, and there are no barriers on either side in many places.
**Conclusion:**
Our 10-day self-drive family adventure was a memorable experience, filled with both planned and unplanned moments. Despite some minor setbacks, the trip was a success, and we look forward to our next adventure together.D. If you want more flexibility, try to book accommodations later. As another reason we couldn’t visit the newly discovered looted cave was that the next hotel was fully booked. If we had gone back to see it and then driven to the hotel, we would have been driving until the early morning.
E. When in the northwest, try the local noodles. As someone who doesn’t usually enjoy noodles, I couldn’t help but remember the steamed noodles in Danxia and fell in love with the local buns, especially the red bean-filled ones, which were truly delicious and chewy.
In conclusion: The beauty is on the road, and freedom is in the wind. May your self-drive tour be delightful and visually pleasing. The 10-day Qinghai-Gansu tour comes to an end.
