Nanmu Garden Forest Park is situated on the eastern side of Chongqing’s Changshou District, approximately 10 kilometers away from the city center and easily accessible via the Chongqing-Fuling Expressway. Named after the ancient temple and the abundant Nanmu trees covering the mountains, it is also known as the ‘Little Bamboo Sea’.

The park, originally known as the Lu Kun Temple built during the Tang Dynasty, has a history spanning over five hundred years through the Tang, Song, and Yuan dynasties. It was renovated during the Ming Dynasty and renamed as the Guanyin Temple. During the Qing Dynasty’s Guangxu period, it was expanded and restored, and due to the forest’s evolution into a Nanmu tree canopy, it became known as Nanmu Garden.

The current park is planned to cover an area of over 11,400 acres, boasting abundant forest resources and spectacular scenery. It features evergreen forests of 7,000 acres, Nanmu bamboo forests of 5,000 acres, pear orchards of 1,000 acres, and a forest coverage rate of 80%. The park is home to 760 species of flora, including the so-called living fossils such as ginkgo, metasequoia, and Nanmu, as well as towering ancient trees with a diameter of up to 100 meters, and almost pristine evergreen broadleaf forests of silk chestnut. Additionally, there are 91 species of rare animals and 5 natural karst caves.

In the past, Nanmu Garden was a wooden structure, housing halls for the Great Buddha, Mountain King, and Guan Yu, with over 100 rooms, which led the local people to refer to the valley of Xiaoshan, the Buddha of Donglin Temple, and the buildings of Nanmu Garden as the three wonders of the temple. The scenic area is characterized by vast forests, murmuring brooks, shady trees, secluded paths, and pavilions and stone chairs scattered along the roadside and under the trees. In the scorching heat of summer, a leisurely walk in the forest brings a refreshing breeze, making it an ideal place for people to escape the heat, relax, and recuperate. The park is open all day, every day, from January 1st to December 31st.
