Xiaoyu Mountain Park is one of Qingdao’s finest scenic overlooks, cherished for two main reasons: its central location, being one of the closest mountains to the sea in Qingdao, and its elevation of only 60 meters, making the climb effortless and offering a panoramic view of Qingdao’s representative landscape—red-tiled buildings amidst green trees, and the azure sea and sky.
At the summit of Xiaoyu Mountain stands the three-story Octagonal Pavilion, named Lan Chao Pavilion, towering 18 meters high with a green glazed tile roof. Ascending the spiral staircase to the pavilion, visitors are greeted with a view of German-style buildings with red tiles and yellow walls, nestled among the greenery. To the southeast, the golden sands of the First Seawater Bathing Beach stretch towards the blue ocean; to the northeast, the Qingdao TV Tower on Taiping Mountain is visible; on a clear day to the west, one can discern the distant Xiaoqingdao Island and the Zhan Bridge; and to the north, the panoramic view of Signal Hill Park can be captured, with the迎宾宾馆 on the hillside and the three red-topped mushroom buildings at the summit clearly visible.
At night, the park offers an excellent vantage point for photographing the night view of Qingdao. Adjacent to the Lan Chao Pavilion, the Hexagonal Pavilion, Bi Bo Pavilion, and the Four-Cornered Pavilion, Yong Cui Pavilion, both with green glazed tile roofs, provide additional viewpoints. The curved corridor connecting the Lan Chao Pavilion and Yong Cui Pavilion features a white relief with the modern characters ‘Xiao’ and ‘Shan’ and the ancient pictograph ‘Yu’, forming the emblem of Xiaoyu Mountain. Visitors can take a photo with the emblem, which is accompanied by an attractive mural.
On the southern slope of Xiaoyu Mountain, there is a miniature model of Qingdao’s architecture for those interested. The park is surrounded by numerous attractions, mostly along the coastline. To the west, one can follow the route of Zhan Bridge – Naval Museum – Xiaoqingdao – Lu Xun Park – Xiaoyu Mountain Park; to the east, one can visit Kang Youwei’s former residence, the First Seawater Bathing Beach, the Eight Great Passes, and finally, watch the sunset at Taiping Jiao. The park is open year-round from 06:00 to 20:00.
