The Drum Tower in Zhouzhuang, Jiangsu Province has a rare large-scale architecture in China. It is divided into two floors. The lower floor is in the shape of an arched and beamless city gate. The upper floor has a double-eaved four-sloped roof, with vivid dragons and phoenixes, and exquisitely carved beams and painted pillars. It is very spectacular.
Originally, upstairs was used to welcome kings and consorts and receive imperial edicts and tell time in the Ming Dynasty. There were originally two large drums and twenty-four small drums for timekeeping and ceremonial purposes, as well as other musical instruments. After the fall of the Ming Dynasty, these furnishings were all lost. The current foundation of the building is the original construction in the Ming Dynasty, and the upstairs building was renovated in the late Qing Dynasty. In 1685, a huge stele was built upstairs, and the Drum Tower was changed into a stele tower. However, local people still habitually call it the Drum Tower.
