Qi Yan Temple is situated in the eastern suburbs of Bengbu, on the top of the Zhuzi Mountain, and was originally built during the Han Dynasty. It is named Qi Yan Temple because the temple is constructed on the rock. Additionally, its Buddha hall, monk’s hall, and scripture pavilion are all made of white rock, hence it is commonly known as the White Stone Temple.
The temple was destroyed by war during the Sui and Tang dynasties, but was rebuilt in the early Tang Dynasty. After several wars, it was fortunately restored by kind-hearted people. Through the generations, it was embellished and by the time of the Hongwu Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang in the early Ming Dynasty, the Buddha hall, monk’s hall, scripture pavilion, and pagoda courtyard were rebuilt, with pavilions and towers connected, making it a spectacular sight. For a time, it was extremely popular with worshippers.
