In 2016, my husband and I were fans of Cuilongzhai when we were dating. We both loved their soup dumplings. Whenever we had no classes, my husband would take me to visit the Confucius Temple (we were poor students). I don’t know where we got so much to talk about back then; from the moment we met, we talked non-stop, even when we returned to the dormitory, we still had more to say. Every time we visited the Confucius Temple, we would go to Cuilongzhai for soup dumplings. I still remember the first time we went; my husband and I argued fiercely about which soup dumplings to eat. I wanted to eat crab roe soup dumplings, but he was reluctant to spend money and wanted to eat chicken broth soup dumplings. I scolded him for being stingy and insisted on eating crab roe soup dumplings (the more expensive ones). The shop owner suddenly said, “Just order the expensive ones, don’t save money for him, eat,” which made my husband and me laugh. The impression was particularly deep. Their dumplings are strange; they are upside down, with the pleats at the bottom, and the soup dumplings look like a small balloon, full of soup that sways inside the skin, and a bite is absolutely delicious.

Now that our child is in kindergarten and we’ve been back in Wuhan for so many years, we still miss this taste. My husband had no choice but to call the boss and ask him to send us some. This time, we took our two children to Shanghai and passed by Nanjing. My husband teased me, and on impulse, we got off the highway and went straight to Cuilongzhai. It was the same familiar boss, the same familiar cash register, the same familiar tables, the same familiar photos, and the same familiar soup dumplings, but the boss didn’t recognize us. Our son, like me, likes to eat roast duck and crab roe soup dumplings; our daughter likes crab roe soup dumplings and red bean glutinous rice balls, and my husband is still the same as before, taking all the leftovers. While eating and chatting with the boss, the boss didn’t realize we were old fans (we hadn’t been there for six years). When I asked the boss if he still shipped to Wuhan, he suddenly remembered us and was very enthusiastic, giving us snacks and drinks, and when we left, he gave us a gift box of soup dumplings, which was truly a sentimental experience.
