Xixing Ancient Town on the south bank of the Qiantang River was once the gateway to the two Zhejiang provinces in history. With developed transportation and a strategically important location, it has been known since ancient times as ‘the premier place in eastern Zhejiang and the gateway to Ningbo, Shaoxing, and Taizhou’. The history of Xixing can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn Period. Fan Li, a senior official of the State of Yue, built a city here to resist the State of Wu, which was called Guling at that time. In the Six Dynasties, it was called Xiling. King Qian Liu of Wuyue changed Xiling to Xixing because ‘ling’ is not an auspicious word. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Xixing was under the jurisdiction of Xiaoshan County, Shaoxing Prefecture. This remained the same in the Republic of China. After liberation, Xiaoshan County was placed under Hangzhou City, and Xixing belonged to Hangzhou. In 1996, the three towns of Yanpu, Changhe, and Xixing in Xiaoshan were incorporated into Xihu District, Hangzhou City. Later, Binjiang District was established separately. Therefore, although Xixing belongs to the urban area of Hangzhou, in terms of language and architecture, it is closer to Shaoxing than to Hangzhou. Open all year round and open all day.
