In December, I had the pleasure of visiting a hidden gem in Shanghai with friends. We indulged in gourmet food and photography, with a per capita consumption of 210 yuan. This unremarkable Chaoshan cuisine restaurant, which even locals might not know, offers authentic Chaozhou home-cooked dishes, snake feasts, and seafood sets. Here’s the detailed information about our dining experience:

**Per Capita Consumption:** 90 yuan
**Environment:** Located on the first basement floor of Liuyanglou Food City on North Sichuan Road, you’ll first encounter a row of fresh seafood stalls. The restaurant’s name is prominently displayed above the entrance. Inside, you’ll find photos and prices of dishes on the inner wall near the entrance, with the cashier and a private room on the right side.
Foodies who are eager to taste delicious food from all over the place will not want to miss this place. Despite its unassuming appearance, Chaoshanchun Seafood Food Stall offers a unique and memorable dining experience. The restaurant’s seating arrangement is quite distinctive. A row along the wall is made into compartment seats, while in the middle, there are wooden round tables and chairs. The overall environment is simple and clean, adorned with photos of dishes and menu prices.
Service-wise, the restaurant, located on the first basement floor, boasts powerful free wifi provided by the store, which is particularly useful since the signal from one’s own mobile phone may not be strong. The waiters are responsive when called, but they could benefit from further training to introduce dish names when serving.
Visually, the private room and the lobby are separated by wooden strips, creating a distinct ambiance. The private room has its own unique charm, while the lobby features train compartment-style sofa seats, adding to the overall dining experience.
#Pan-Fried Leather Jacket Fish#
This is a type of Chaoshan sea fish, similar to the pan-fried small yellow croaker found in Shanghai. Upon tasting, one can immediately appreciate the perfect combination of crispness, freshness, and fragrance. The meat is layered clearly and very tender, making it an ideal snack.
#Oyster Omelette 38 yuan#
The oyster omelette is a golden, smooth, and soft egg and seafood pancake. The skin is crispy, and the inner layer is oily, tender, and soft, combining a slight egg fragrance without losing the taste of seafood. The unique saltiness of fish sauce enhances the flavor, making it a truly delightful dish.
#Seafood Fried Rice Noodles 38 yuan#
If there were a fried rice noodle competition in Shanghai, this dish would certainly garner my vote. The rice noodles are distinct, and the shrimps and squids, with their slits or cross-cuts, add more flavor. The addition of tomatoes introduces a sweet and sour taste of fruits and vegetables, making it a dish worth capturing in a few photos and sharing on social media to pay tribute to the chef’s efforts.#Handmade Beef and Cuttlefish Balls#
We ordered handmade cuttlefish balls to taste. After being put into the soup and rolling up and being fished out, we tasted them carefully. The beef balls have relatively tender meat and a smooth taste, just as delicious as what I ate in Chaoshan.
#Fish Dumplings#
Made with fish skin as the wrapper, enclosing pork. Once boiled, the fresh red meat shines through the fish skin, offering a fragrant and tender experience.
#Snake Skin and Meat#
First, immerse them in the soup, ensuring every inch of the thin snake skin and meat is in full contact with the broth. After cooking, place them in your mouth, but take care as they are extremely hot. Gently bite into them to savor the crispy snake skin and the tender snake meat, a flavor sensation that is truly unforgettable.
#Spicy Salt Snake Segments#
The snake segments are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, with a savory aroma that permeates the dish.
#Oysters and Abalone#
These oysters are incredibly generous in size, almost as big as the thumb. The sweet oyster juice mixed with the fresh sea scent provides a refreshing experience, eliminating any greasiness from the previous meat dishes. Eating abalone meat can help resist diseases and has low fat content. It’s crisp with a bit of chewiness, leaving a lingering fragrance in the mouth and a refreshing aroma.
