The Qi Family Military Memorial, located in Qiaoting, Chi’an Town, is built in a low-lying valley with a rounded and undulating terrain opposite the village. The majestic two-eaved city gate tower stands tall and imposing, with ‘Great Walls’ made of blue stone on either side, snaking along the terrain to the mountains in the north and south. As one approaches the city gate tower, the words ‘Triumph Pavilion’ shine with a golden glow. Viewing the ‘Great Wall’, city gate tower, and beacon tower, one is filled with immense admiration and pride for the patriotic spirit of loyalty to the country exhibited by our ancestors. This is because the Qi Family Military is a source of pride for the people of Yiwu. In the past, Qi Jiguang recruited 3000 Yiwu soldiers in the southern part of Yiwu, Chi’an area, to resist the Wokou pirates in Eastern Zhejiang. These soldiers cleared the coastal Wokou menace and defended the northern borders, known for their bravery and endurance, and were referred to as ‘models of soldiers’. During the Ming Dynasty alone, 228 individuals were awarded military titles such as Chief Marshal, General, Deputy Commander, Colonel, Captain, and Household Head for their military merits. On the crab-shaped mountain to the north of the memorial, there is a group of tombs for these military officials. The entire project of the Qi Family Military Memorial is not yet fully completed. Follow-up projects will include a Ming Dynasty weaponry museum, a martial arts hall, and a warship practice lake. In the future, the grand stage of the Qi Family Military’s achievements will be majestically displayed on this heroic land that nurtured the ‘models of soldiers’.
