The former residence of Cai Yuanpei is located in the historical block of the hometown of the sage of calligraphy. It is a Ming and Qing dynasty gatehouse building with distinctive Shaoxing characteristics.
Now, the front wing rooms of the hall, the hall and the two side rooms, the west wing room in front of the seated building and the west side room of the seated building are all opened as the ‘Exhibition Room of Cai Yuanpei’s Life History’, showing the achievements of Mr. Cai Yuanpei’s life. The main building of the former residence faces south and is of brick-wood structure with three entrances. The first entrance hall faces east and there is a plaque with the inscription ‘Former Residence of Cai Yuanpei’ written by Liu Haisu hanging above it. The second entrance hall and the third entrance building all face south. The three entrances are not on the same axis. The front courtyard leading from the entrance hall to the hall is particularly spacious, almost as large as a basketball court. The surrounding walls are also particularly high. The high walls and deep courtyard give an extraordinary momentum. The second entrance has one hall and two rooms and has been opened as an exhibition room. In the middle of the hall is a bust of Cai Yuanpei, showing the demeanor of a scholar. Opening hours: Open all year round from 08:30 to 17:00.
