Zi Cheng is located on Fuzheng Street in the heart of Jiaxing City, historically serving as the site of the city’s administrative offices throughout the dynasties and the former location of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom’s Listening Prince’s Mansion. Constructed in the third year of the Huanglong era during the Three Kingdoms period of the Wu Kingdom (231 AD), Zi Cheng has a history spanning over 1,700 years.
Measuring two li and ten steps in circumference, with a height and thickness of one zhang and two chi, Zi Cheng covers an area of 75,000 square meters. At the end of the Tang Dynasty, due to the construction of Luocheng outside the original city, the original city was renamed Zi Cheng (another theory suggests that the city was surrounded by catalpa trees, initially called Zicheng, which was later corrupted into Zi Cheng). The existing Zi Cheng and the watchtower were rebuilt in 1990, stretching approximately 100 meters in length. The walls are made of brick and stone, equipped with battlements on top and a city gate at the bottom. The gate is wooden, guarded by stone lions at the entrance. Climbing the city walls offers a panoramic view of the Hecheng scenery and the misty rain of Nanhu Lake. Opening hours during the summer season are from 6:00 AM to 8:30 PM; the specific business status is subject to the day’s opening conditions.Zi Cheng – Ancient Seat of Power in Jiaxing
