The Hugong Temple on the top of Fangyan Mountain houses the Great Emperor Hugong, whose reputation is far-reaching and resounds throughout the Jiangnan region. Thousands of devout men and women come here. In front of the seated statue of Hugong, red candles are bright and incense is curling. The place is bustling. The Great Emperor Hugong is neither a god nor a Buddha but a human being. His surname is Hu and his given name is Ze. He is from Huku Village, Yongkang, Wuzhou. He was an honest and upright official in the Northern Song Dynasty. During his tenure as an official, he was honest, upright and had remarkable political achievements. The common people are deeply grateful and praise him everywhere. After his death, a temple was built to worship him and people respect him as if he were a deity. ‘Be an official for one term and bring benefits to one place.’ Now these eight characters are engraved on the screen wall in front of the Hugong Temple, echoing the screen wall with the imperial calligraphy ‘Heling’ by Emperor Gaozong of the Song Dynasty at the entrance to the mountain from afar, shining brightly for a long time. Opening hours: Open all year round from 07:30 to 16:00.
