Dieshan Academy, located in the east of Yiyang County, Jiangxi Province, is adjacent to the Xinjiang River and covers an area of nearly 7000 square meters. It was originally the place where the Southern Song scholar Xie Fangde studied in his early years. Xie Fangde, styled Junzhi and known as Dieshan, perished with his family when the Southern Song Dynasty was overthrown by the Yuan Dynasty. In the fifth year of the Yanyou era under Emperor Renzong of the Yuan Dynasty (1318 AD), the local people, despite official obstruction, built this academy to commemorate Xie Fangde’s national spirit and integrity. It was later destroyed by fire and then rebuilt.
