Shui Yue Zen Temple, originally known as the Pagoda Temple, is located on the western outskirts of Suining, China, by the rippling waters of Shui Yue Lake. The temple covers an area of over 300 acres and is now a national AAAA-level scenic spot. Initially constructed during the late Eastern Han Dynasty, the temple has withstood the ravages of war and experienced the ups and downs of successive dynasties.
Reconstructed in April 2011 and completed in October 2013, the temple’s construction centers around the planning concept of ‘graceful integration with nature, classical layout; simple architecture, Zen space.’ The architectural style is unique and innovative, breaking away from the conventional thinking about Buddhist architecture. The design perfectly blends Buddhist elements with architectural art, presenting a distinctive approach and a more rational function and layout, achieving an exquisite fusion of Buddhist elements with modern architectural art, and creating a uniquely crafted Buddhist activity venue in China.
Due to the temple’s proximity to water and the Buddhist belief in cause, effect, completeness, and imperfection, akin to the moon, and with a focus on the culture of the Water and Moon Guanyin, the temple is named ‘Shui Yue Zen Temple.’ In November 2015, it was recognized as one of the top nine religious buildings globally at the World Architecture Festival held in Singapore.
