Alpacas, humorously referred to as GrassMudHorse in a playful take on Chinglish, are one of the top ten mythical creatures spoofed by Chinese netizens. The original prototype is the alpaca, native to South America, originating from the Baidu World of Warcraft Bar. Including alpacas, the first release of the ten mythical creatures was on Baidu Baike (in 2009), and they quickly gained popularity, widely circulated in chat rooms and forums. Videos, cartoons, and merchandise related to alpacas have also become the focus of global attention and have become synonymous with Chinese internet slang for criticism. In 2013, CNN ranked alpacas seventh in the world’s list of adorable species. On May 29, 2020, alpacas were included in the ‘National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Variety Catalog’ published by the Office of the National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Committee. Visit the Divine Creature: Alpaca Theme Pavilion to get up close and personal with this mythical creature! Open from December 1st to November 30th, 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.
