Today’s Mount Putuo is a famous place for worshipping Buddha. There are many nunneries and temples on the mountain. It often takes only a few minutes to walk between two places. However, a long time ago on Mount Putuo, there was not even a thatched nunnery. Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva had to sit on a drum-shaped boulder about 30 meters long every night to preach the great compassion Dharma. This is the Fashuai Terrace standing on the southwestern coast of Mount Putuo today. At that time, birds, beasts and aquatic creatures in the East China Sea all came to listen to Avalokitesvara’s preaching. This has led to many well-known legends. The Dragon King of the East China Sea was puzzled by this and sent two turtles to spy. The two turtles were so absorbed in listening that they forgot to return. Later, they turned into stubborn stones. There is also a cow that came from afar and finally turned into a stubborn stone. The humorous result formed by the legend is the Two Turtles Listening to Dharma Stone and the Blue Bull Stone in front of the Fashuai Terrace. Open all year round and all day long.
