In Wuzhen’s Xizha, there stands a Tongji Bridge and a Renji Bridge, one running in the north-south direction and the other in the east-west direction. The two bridges form a right angle to each other, and from either bridge, one can see the other through the archway, resembling the moon in a well, hence the name ‘Bridge within a Bridge’. Both bridges are arched structures, tall and majestic. When viewed from the south bank of the river, the semi-circular arches of the bridges reflect on the water surface, appearing neither fully circular nor fully round, a blend of reality and illusion, making it a significant scenic spot in Wuzhen. At night, under the outline of lights, the scene becomes even more enchanting. The ‘Bridge within a Bridge’ is an ancient bridge landscape in Wuzhen, and it stands out in terms of both grandeur and design compared to double bridges found elsewhere. It is a fusion of cultural beauty and pastoral beauty, combining the wild exuberance and the exquisite construction. Wild branches emerge from the bridge seams, and from the bridgehead, one can overlook the waterside pavilion scenery, the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal meanders northward, the Wenchang Pavilion stands out with its elegance, and the White Lotus Pagoda towers high, making it a unique bridge view. Open all year round, accessible 24/7.
