Meixi Paifang is located in Meixi Village, Shangchong, Zhuhai, and was built by Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty to honor Chen Fang, the first Hawaiian consul, and his parents for their contributions to their hometown, earning the reputation of ‘one of the best archways in China’. Visitors can explore the former residence of a celebrity, appreciate historical architecture, and enjoy folk performances such as Sichuan Opera face-changing. There are three existing archways at Meixi Paifang, constructed in the 12th year (1886) and the 17th year (1891) of the Guangxu period, making them rare historical buildings in South China. Made of pure granite, Meixi Paifang features a blend of Chinese and Western artistic styles, exquisite carvings, and decorations that allow you to fully appreciate its artistic charm.
The former residence of Mr. Chen Fang, the first Chinese consul in Hawaii and a millionaire overseas Chinese, is also located within the scenic area, including a Chen Ancestral Hall, two large houses, a Western-style house, a flower hall, and Meixi Temple and ancestral halls. The entire structure is meticulously crafted, with intricately carved beams and painted rafters inside and out, making it a must-see. The Flower Hall is particularly distinctive, with all doors, windows, walls, both inside and outside, engraved with carvings. Additionally, visitors can also take a stroll through the Chen Fang Garden and Cemetery in front of the former residence. Apart from visiting the former residence of a celebrity, the scenic area also offers entertainment and performances such as the Tianqiao Zhongfan, Diankongzhu, Sichuan Opera face-changing, Sichuan long-spouted pot tea art, and Daejanggeum swing. The Sichuan Opera face-changing performances are held daily at 10:00, 11:00, and 15:30, allowing visitors to experience different folk customs.
