The Zhongjiang Tower stands majestically on the river embankment at the confluence of the Qingyi River and the Yangtze River. Half leaning against the bustling city and half by the river, the ancients praised it as ‘hibiscus on the river’. The Zhongjiang Tower was first built in 1618 (the 46th year of Wanli in the Ming Dynasty) and was completed in 1669 (the eighth year of Kangxi in the Qing Dynasty). It is a pavilion-style brick-wood structure feng shui pagoda with eight corners and five floors. Each side is 4.1 meters long. The tower is 43.7 meters high, of which the tower spire is 10.16 meters high. There are four windows on each floor, staggered and arranged alternately. There is a lamp niche on the left and right of each window. The internal structure of the tower is a wall-climbing style on the first and second floors, with stone stairs winding around. The third to fifth floors are hollow tube types, with wooden stairs attached to the wall. The doors, windows and tower walls are exquisitely carved. Brick carvings are embedded on each side of the wall, especially the brick carvings on both sides of the circular inclined columns on the 1st and 2nd floors are more prominent. In 1987, after maintenance organized by the provincial archaeological research institute, the cornice part of the tower was restored. The eight corners are supported by corner brackets to support the old rafters and project outwards, with a long overhang. The eight sides are supported by two brackets to support the eaves purlins and project outwards. The rafters and flying rafters are nailed with roof boards and covered with mandarin duck tiles. After renovation, the Zhongjiang Tower is majestic and magnificent. Standing on the top of the tower, you can have a panoramic view of countless scenes. The Zhongjiang Tower can be regarded as a landmark of Wuhu’s geographical location. The Zhongjiang Tower overlooks the two rivers, reflecting the two waters. In the morning glow and sunset, the tower shadow is long, reflecting the mighty Yangtze River in the morning and shifting to the clear Qingyi River in the evening. The waves and tower shadows are extremely beautiful. At night, the moonlight is bright, fishing fires are dotted. As the moon rises, the shadow shifts. The waves sway and the shadows shake. Accompanied by the sound of waves, it is even more enchanting and leisurely. Open all year round and open all day.
