Wudaoying Hutong has now become a burgeoning gathering place for the artistic and chic in Beijing, alongside popular destinations like Nanluoguxiang and Shichahai. Various retro and original boutiques, book bars, coffee shops, and distinctive restaurants line the alleyways. Historically known as ‘Wudeweiying’ during the Ming Dynasty, Wudaoying Hutong has transformed into a place akin to Nanluoguxiang, becoming a new favorite among the artistic and young. Compared to Nanluoguxiang, Yandai Xiejie, and Shichahai, Wudaoying Hutong offers more tranquility and leisure.

Many interesting and atmospheric specialty restaurants, coffee shops, and small stores can be found in the Hutong, mostly operated by foreigners and returnees, with many owners being directors and artists. Hardcore art enthusiasts may wish to spend some money to visit Jingzai Wei, a three-part antique Siheyuan vegetarian restaurant whose appearance is a scenic spot in itself. Saffron Western Restaurant, a Spanish dining establishment popular among Beijing’s petite bourgeoisie, allows for dining in the courtyard during summer, enjoying a refreshing breeze while sipping on a fruit wine.

Behind the restaurant lies a mixed courtyard and residential area. In the morning, one can see aunties wearing slippers and carrying enamel bowls going out to buy tofu brain. At night, fashionable young artists can be spotted. Foreigners leisurely ride bicycles through the Hutong, children play in sand piles, and occasionally, one can hear the cries of vendors. The entire area is open all year round, accessible 24/7, with specific business hours subject to daily conditions.

Key Tips:

1. Wudaoying Hutong is not wide, and it only takes one to two hours to walk through it. It is recommended to enter from the eastern side, near Yonghegong, and stroll the Hutong, slowing down to experience the old Beijing vibe.

2. Many small shops offer retro and original items, which are not cheap but also not too expensive. Bargaining is an option to consider.
