During the Hongzhi reign of the Ming Dynasty, Lady Luo, the wet nurse of Emperor Xiaozong, constructed the Yuanjing Temple in front of the mountain. In the 15th year of the Qianlong Emperor’s reign, to celebrate the 60th birthday of the Empress Dowager, the Da Bao’en Yanshou Temple was built on the site of the Yuanjing Temple. The following year, the mountain was renamed Wanshou Mountain. The soil excavated from the expansion of Kunming Lake was strategically piled on the mountain to create gentle and symmetrical slopes on both the east and west, making it the central feature of the entire garden.

The architectural complex was built along the mountain, and the existing structures are those rebuilt by Empress Dowager Cixi after they were destroyed by the British and French allied forces. Starting from the ‘Yunhui Yuyu’ archway at the foot of the mountain, passing through the Paiyun Gate, the Second Palace Gate, the Paiyun Hall, the Dehui Hall, the Fo Xiang Pavilion, and culminating at the Zhihui Sea at the mountaintop, a central axis of ascending levels is formed, which is a must-visit for tourists.
