Dongpao Tai Seaside Scenic Area is located on the picturesque Binhai North Road in Yantai City, a region acclaimed by the World Tourism Organization as a coastal area that can rival the Mediterranean coast. It is nestled against Heiqi Mountain to the south and faces Zhifu Island and Kongtong Island across the sea to the north, covering an area of approximately 100,000 square meters. This comprehensive coastal tourist attraction integrates coastal sightseeing, historical sites, tourism, and national defense education, and is a provincial cultural protection unit.
Dongpao Tai was first constructed in 1891 when the late Qing Dynasty’s Northern Ocean Minister Li Hongzhang petitioned Emperor Guangxu to build the battery to defend against enemy ships from the north. The ancient battery, costing a million taels of silver, was equipped with a gate, Qing soldier barracks, a command post, a narrow trench for troop movement, concealed shelters, and other coastal defense facilities, and installed the advanced Krupp cannons of the time. The ancient battery is majestic and a blend of Chinese and Western styles, being one of the well-preserved coastal defense facilities in modern Chinese history. Built along the bay, the Seal Bay is a distinctive tourist attraction of Dongpao Tai. Over 60 spotted seals are raised in the Seal Bay, with water circulation managed by natural tides. The entire Seal Bay is divided into three functional areas: a breeding area, a performance area, and a water亲近 area. Visitors can not only enjoy the exciting performances of the seals but also have close contact with them, take photos, and experience the joy of harmonious coexistence between humans and animals.
