Jiangwan is an ancient village with rich historical and cultural heritage, located in the northeast of Wuyuan County. The architectural layout of Jiangwan is extremely distinctive. There is one street and six lanes crisscrossing. Looking down from Houlong Mountain, the lanes actually form a huge character ‘An’, which is astonishing. At the entrance of the ancient town is the large-scale ‘Xiaojiang Ancestral Hall’, which is a very large ancestral hall in Wuyuan and even in the south of the Yangtze River, fully showing the royal style. The ancestral hall is divided into four sections: front courtyard, front hall, middle hall and back hall. The brick carvings, wood carvings and stone carvings in the ancestral hall are vivid in form, beautiful and elegant. What the people of Jiangwan are proud of is Houlong Mountain. Since ancient times, no one in Jiangwan is allowed to touch a single plant or tree on Houlong Mountain. The ecological environment is very well protected. Entering Houlong Mountain is like entering a primeval forest. The ancient trees all over the mountain block out the sky and add a lot of charm to the ancient village of Jiangwan built against the mountain. Jiangwan has a prosperous literary style and many sages have emerged. It has given birth to a large number of scholars and celebrities such as Jiang Yong, a scholar of classics and phonology in the Qing Dynasty, Jiang Yilin, a vice minister of the Ministry of Household Affairs during the Longqing period of the Ming Dynasty, and Jiang Qian, a famous educator and Buddhist scholar in the late Qing Dynasty. It is worthy of being the representative of ‘hometown of scholars’ in Wuyuan. In the village, there are still ancient Huizhou-style buildings such as Jiang Yong’s former residence, Sansheng Hall, Dunchong Hall, Peixin Hall, four ancient gate pavilions of Donghe, Nanguan, Xi’an and Beiyue, Yuefei Bridge built by Yue Fei, and Jianquan Well in the Ming Dynasty, which are very worth seeing. In addition, tourists can also experience the traditional skills of craftsmen in old times in scenic spots such as Baigongfang, Guchuitang and Commune Canteen, and can also watch traditional operas such as Huizhou Opera and Wuyuan folk songs.
