Xihai Grand Canyon, also known as Baiyun Valley or Dreamland Scenic Area, is a newly developed attraction within the Huangshan Scenic Area. It is less frequented by tour groups, making it an ideal destination for hikers seeking tranquility and exploration. The valley is characterized by its jagged rocks, deep caves, and trails clinging to sheer cliffs, embodying mystery and peril.
Xihai Grand Canyon is enclosed by peculiar peaks and rocks such as the nearby Shi Zhu Peak, Shi Chuang Peak, the right-front Biao Dao Peak, Fei Lai Stone, the opposite Pai Yun Pavilion, Dan Xia Peak, Pine Forest Peak, and the left-front Jiu Long Peak, and Yun Wai Peak. The geographical location forms a ‘U’ shape with two entrances: Pai Yun Pavilion North and Tian Hai South. Regardless of which direction you approach from, the journey involves descending to the valley floor and then ascending back out. Your route can be determined based on your accommodation, with hotels typically located near Pai Yun Pavilion or Tian Hai. If staying near Pai Yun Pavilion, opt for Dan Xia Peak or Pai Yun Pavilion to watch the sunrise and sunset. If at Tian Hai, consider Guan Ming Ding or Ao Yu Peak for these views. These spots are also excellent for observing sea of clouds, sunset glow, and secluded peaks and valleys, with the specific timing adaptable to your itinerary. The classic route often taken by tourists starts from the back mountain, accessible via Taiping Cableway to Dan Xia Station. If you’re staying near Pai Yun Pavilion, you can start the day by enjoying the sunrise at Dan Xia Peak and viewing the Fei Lai Stone, which appeared in ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’, before entering the grand canyon from the north entrance at Pai Yun Pavilion. Before entering the grand canyon, it is crucial to check your equipment and food supplies, as you will need to replenish during the journey. If your supplies are insufficient, you can restock at Pai Yun Pavilion, which has a small shop selling snacks. Upon entering the Xihai Grand Canyon, there is a service station near the valley floor where you can rest and resupply water and food. After passing through the first and second rings, you will reach the valley floor, with signs guiding your way. The journey from the valley floor to the Tian Hai South entrance is more extended, covering three-fifths of the grand canyon. If hiking, you will pass the grand canyon service station, then to Bu Xian Bridge, marking the Tian Hai South entrance. Conveniently, there is now a sightseeing cable car that directly connects the valley floor to Tian Hai. If you have other attractions planned for the day, it is recommended to take the cable car to save time and energy. For accommodation, there are two hotels at Tian Hai: Bai Yun Hotel and Tian Hai Villa. In the evening, you can conveniently visit Guan Ming Ding to watch the sunset. If you are staying near Paiyun Pavilion, you can enter from the south entrance of Tianhai. Follow the above route in reverse and walk back to the vicinity of Paiyun Pavilion. You can watch the sunset at Paiyun Pavilion that evening. For accommodation, you can choose Xihai Hotel or Paiyunlou Hotel. In addition, there are restaurants in the hotels. You can choose to dine inside or purchase some eight-treasure porridge, instant noodles, etc. from the foot of the mountain to satisfy your hunger.
