Nantang Old Street is located outside the south gate of Ningbo’s ancient city, once the commercial and cultural hub of old Ningbo known as the ‘Three Markets of the South Gate’, and is one of the eight historical districts in Ningbo. The old street retains over 500 meters of traditional Jiangnan alleys and has successfully integrated the historical charm, architectural features, and celebrity culture into the layout during its design and construction, recreating the strong atmosphere of Ningbo’s commerce and daily life over the past century.
The entrance to the old street is marked by the ‘Nantang Old Street’ archway, with blue walls and black tiles, carved eaves on both sides, which appear relatively new due to recent restorations. The shops along the street mostly sell Ningbo snacks, with a variety of options available, making it a paradise for food enthusiasts who can indulge in a continuous feast.
Nantang Old Street is also home to numerous cultural and historical sites: Yuan Xie, one of the ‘Four Masters of Chunxi’ from the Southern Song Dynasty, and his descendants lived here. Additionally, there is the former residence of the renowned film artist Yuan Muzhi, the Yongshu Bridge, a strategic passage from ancient Mingzhou to southern and western Zhejiang, the Yongshan Pavilion built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, the Guansheng Hall, Tongmao Ji, Yu’s Ancestral Hall, several stone river piers, and numerous street-side shops and workshops.
