Shen’ao Ancient Town is mainly composed of Shen’ao Ancient Village. It also includes three villages: Xufan, Huanxi, and Dipu. The total area is 10.5 hectares (of which Shen’ao Ancient Village is 7.5 hectares). These four villages are arranged in a line along the west bank of Yingjiaxi River. Shen’ao and Dipu were collectively called Shenpu in history and were developed by the ancestor of the Shentu family after the Southern Song Dynasty. Xufan was where Xu Yanwang of Jinhua moved here in the Southern Song Dynasty. It was developed as a relative of the Shentu family. So far, the main residents are surnamed Xu and Shentu. Huanxi Village was in the Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. Zhou Lianxi, the tenth-generation descendant of the great Confucian Zhou Dunyi, led his clansmen to move here and multiplied from generation to generation. As the village is surrounded by two streams, it is named ‘Huanxi’ and most people are surnamed Zhou. The Qing Dynasty was a period of rapid development in the history of Shen’ao Village. In the middle and late Qing Dynasty, a group of merchants who became rich by trafficking straw paper appeared. Most of the buildings in the village were constructed during this period. Open all year round and open all day.
